I have been working with Ziff-Davis’ ITLink social networking site, adding content that is geared towards the reseller community. Channel Chat Podcast: How VARs can use online communities

I have been working with Ziff-Davis’ ITLink social networking site, adding content that is geared towards the reseller community. Given its early stages, the place has attracted a few hardy souls to talk about tech issues in the channel. I would urge you to try out some of the discussion groups and post a few comments here and there.

I put together my first text-chat and podcast with Ann Revell-Pechar, a longtime PR/marcom professional, talking about issues for how VARs can use online communities. Please check them both out and let me know what you think. We cover issues such as should VARs set up their own blogs and wikis, should they ghost-write their clients’ blogs, and should they use or resell other interactive tools.

Endpoint Security: Protecting networks from mobile end-users

I continue to talk about this topic with a speech to the members of Washington University’s Center for Application of Information Technology on March 22nd and for the Association of IT Professionals on April 26th. I will examine current solutions and products that claim to provide endpoint security and their strengths and deficiencies. I will highlight the different components of solid endpoint security solutions, and outline the four questions that you need to have answered before you get ready to buy solutions for your enterprise. I will also look at the standards being developed by Microsoft, Cisco and open source, how they stack-up against each other, and what you can be doing now as these are being finalized.

Here is a link to a presentation on cracking NAC that was presented at Black Hat Europe last month.

TechPR War Stories Podcast #2

Paul Gillin and I have begun a series of podcasts for tech PR types. I talk this week about a Microsoft developer’s conference. Some attendees are complaining about how Microsoft treats them, and they’re blogging openly about it. Paul and David discuss the issue of openness and the emerging PR paradigm of embracing the bad with the good. What’s important is the conversation, they agree, not controlling the message. In Cheers & Jeers, David has no problem with Amanda Congdon’s promotional video for DuPont, while Paul grimaces at the memory of a CEO’s PowerPoint from hell.

Real-World Best Practices for Endpoint Security Podcast

Preparation is important when securing a remote office or branch office, but there’s nothing like the skills and experience gained from actually undergoing the experience. What are some of the lessons learned by those who have secured extensive branch office networks? In this podcast for Techtarget’s SearchSecurity.com, I  talk with David O’Berry, an IT manager with the State of South Carolina, about what is involved in setting up remote office and branch office endpoint security experiences.
